Sydney's Sculptures by the Sea 2018

Mu Boyan, 'Horizon’.

Sculpture by the Sea held at Bondi beach, is one of Sydney’s and in fact Australia’s most popular events being the largest annual sculpture exhibition in the world. Each year over 500,000 visitors from throughout Australia and the world view 100’s of sculptures by artists from all corners of the planet.

April Pine, Shifting Horizons. One of my favourite displays as it offered so many angles and options to shoot. Love this moody image but would of loved to have shot them with a vibrant sunset backing also.

Mu Boyan, 'Horizon’. Hands down the most popular sculpture at the event and not without due reason.

Sculptures by the sea is a free event that has been held since 1997 and it never fails to capture the imagination of Sydney for three weeks each spring. Amazingly unique sculptures with a stunning coastal Sydney backdrop makes for a great opportunity for any budding photographer to try their hands at capturing something totally unique and as their photographic juices and imaginations run wild.

While the heavy crowd factor can make it a true challenge to capture clear shots of the fantastic sculptures a little bit of patience will pay dividends. Feel free to perusal the following images to see how I got on behind the lens during this fantastic event. It was a great opportunity to give my new camera setup a good test run by shooting something different to surfing to see what it is truly capable of. I was hoping for a stunning sunset as a backdrop to really add so colour and pop to the images, it didn’t quite happen but I am still happy with the images I managed to capture. Let me know what you think.

Kim Bongsoo, Thoughts of Pinocchio. This was one of my favourite sculptures that went under the radar. I found it to be very subtle, abstract and innovative.

Viktor Freso, Niemand. Naked Napoleon, the little fat naked general.

Wei Wang, Walking. Walking? No shit but awesome and moody as f@%k. I Probably needed someone in the frame to illustrate the full scale of this epic behemoth.

Albert Paley, Languorous Repose. I love how this steam punk esque sculpture ominously compliments the moody grey sky backdrop.

Yu Fan, Wrapped Horse. There is something fantisical about this one.

Deborah Halpern, The Face.

Penelope Forlano, 'Counterpoints'.

STUDIODEX@UNSW, Look Inside My Mind. I love the bold blue colour and glossy sheen on this massive sculpt.

Yu Fan, Wrapped Horse.

Itamar Freed, Whispering to Venus. Somewhat creepy but somewhat cool.

Parvaneh Roudgar, Migration. Another fav. At first I thought they were flowers but on reading the title I see that they are birds migrating either way I love it.

April Pine, Shifting Horizons. Loving the contrast of the rust texture with the blue sea and grey sky on this moody capture.

Mu Boyan, 'Horizon’. It was a true challenge in itself to get a clear shot of this amazing sculpture without hordes of tourists in frame. I literally had to wait twenty minutes for this split second window but it was definitely worth the wait.

Viktor Freso, Niemand. Award, proud and Napoleon esque.
