Brasilian favelas (Brasilian slums) are often treat with a degree of fear, disdain and even intrigue. I spent two months volunteering at the children's charity Project Favela located deep within one of Brasil largest and most infamous favelas, Rio de Janeiro's Rocinha. My time living and working in Rocinha was to prove to be one of the most rewarding, most challenging and unfortunately one of the most dangerous experiences of my life as I was to experience both the beautiful and dark sides of life in Brasil. On this day we were greeted by a fresh and nicely groomed fun 3-4ft swell breaking off the breakwall and I was quickly out there following around after the frothing grommets who were absolutely ripping.
